Impound car insurance
If your car’s been impounded, you’ll need a special insurance policy to release it. Your regular annual or temporary policy may not be accepted. Cuvva’s impound insurance gives you the proof needed to release your car and get back on the road.
Cars get impounded for a variety of reasons, from parking illegally to not having valid insurance or tax. The car will be towed to a pound, which depending on the location or the offence could be run by the police, the DVLA, the local council, or a private company.
Many car insurance policies (from 1 hour temporary policies to annual cover) don’t cover you to release your car from a pound. This means that if your car gets seized, you’ll need to make sure your existing insurance covers impound release, or buy an impound policy to get it released. This is a standalone policy bought solely to get your car out of the pound and back on the road.
If your car’s been impounded, you’ll need to act fast. Pounds charge eye-watering daily fees, and if you don’t collect your car in time, it could be sold or destroyed. Luckily, Cuvva’s impound cover is quick and easy:
1
Download the Cuvva app and head to the ‘Get insured’ tab
Then tap the ‘More’ icon (the button with three dots) in the top-right corner of the screen
2
Select ‘Impound cover’ from the drop-down menu
And then tap ‘Get impound cover’
3
Choose when you need the cover to start
And enter some quick details about the car and your driving history
4
Pay, then head to the pound
You now have cover to retrieve your car
Impound insurance FAQs
What level of cover does impound insurance have?
Impounded vehicle insurance is third-party only. It covers other people and their vehicles or property if you cause an accident. It won’t cover any damage to your car, or if you are injured.
How long does impound insurance last?
Our impound insurance policy lasts 30 days. This is because many pounds require proof you have cover for a minimum of 30 days before releasing your vehicle.
Why do cars get impounded?
Cars can get seized for a variety of reasons, including if the driver doesn’t have insurance, tax, or a valid licence, uses a vehicle in a dangerous or illegal way, parks illegally, is involved in crime, or abandons the vehicle.
What if I need to report an incident or make a claim while driving on an impound policy?
If you need to make a claim or report an incident, call your policy underwriter ‘Wakam’ on 020 3828 7381.
Can I stay insured with Cuvva after using my impound policy?
If you want to keep driving after your impound policy expires, you can get insured with Cuvva’s temporary car insurance. You can either extend your policy in the app (it will turn into one of our fully comprehensive temporary policies), or buy a new policy from 1 hour to 28 days.
